you have to think like a boomer, it was a big deal if a politician lied until fairly recently.
the space race was a big fucking deal and successfully getting to the moon first was considered proof of American exceptionalism and ingenuity. it defined the world's perspective of the USA for the 2nd half of the 20th century.
sure, now when the empire is collapsing, it's expected to be corrupt. but when the empire it at it's zenith it VERY much cares about its public perception (which is the incentive to either land for real or fake it)
and there is VERY much incentive by Russia and China to make it look stupid.
