God offers it, but it doesn't happen until ... ? I was ready to forgive my father as soon as I made it clear that I was no longer accepting his abuse. He never took me up on it. So in that sense, just like God, I forgave. That doesn't mean he was a good person, which was what my original note in this thread was about. Not all parents are saints.
